Let’s face it – even though the GDPR came into effect in May 2018, there are still a lot of CDOs and managers scrambling to get a system in place to deal with their PII. If that’s you, first things first, know that you’re not alone. Overhauling the way your business manages information isn’t easy, especially if you have an international presence. The regulation aims to protect European individuals, but these individuals also travel and sometimes have relationships with third parties that handle European individuals’ data…so the waters can get muddy quickly. So what can you do? This depends on your business, and what systems you already have in place. Sometimes it may mean hiring a data privacy officer who can put in place processes to manage the flow of information in and out of your business. It may also mean preparing for worst case scenarios like what to do if you have a data breach. Data breaches that are high risk to individuals’ rights and freedoms should be reported to authorities within 72 hours according to the GDPR. Other times, businesses have people and processes in place but would benefit from AI and machine learning-based software that is designed to manage their information. The bottom line is don’t panic – if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the whole thing, don’t forget that there are lots of people in the same boat. There are plenty of solutions out there too, and remember – it’s never too late to start. Why not sign up to our upcoming GDPR webinar on the 25th September to find out more?
