Thought of the Day: When will a major cyber-attack on the UK happen?

January 24 13:48 2018 Print This Article

Ciaran Martin, head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, has said that it is a matter of time before the UK faces a major cyber-attack. Although the UK has faced a number of significant cyber-attacks, so far there has not been a ‘category one’ (C1) attack – one that could cripple infrastructure like energy supplies, financial services or cause interference in elections. The US and parts of Europe have already faced C1 attacks.

Although Martin acknowledges that total protection is impossible, it is possible to manage the damage should the worst happen. The WannaCry ransomware attack last year is the most serious cyber-attack on the UK so far and was classified as C2. The truth is, it is difficult to predict when and how a major cyber-attack will take place, making it difficult to plan to prevent it. In the mean time, companies should be aware of the risks and maintain the strongest level of cybersecurity possible.
